The Government Arts College  was established in the year 1966. The college was conferred Autonomous Status during the academic year 2007 - 2008. Autonomous status was further extended upto 2018-19. 

During 2001, the college was accredited with three star status by NAAC. The college was again reaccredited with B+ status by NAAC during 2006-07.
