Overview

Nursing is a very noble occupation. It is the art of taking care of people in sickness, injury, or any other situation when they can't take care of themselves. It is a vital component of any form of medical care. In any hospital, nursing forms an integral part whether it is a general ward or an operation theatre. The legendary English nurse Florence Nightingale is known as the founder of modern nursing.

Earlier it was a career largely chosen by women only but nowadays men are also showing interest in it. But still, it is a women-dominated area, and a few areas where male nurses are not accepted by people also like the gynecology department.

Nursing duties are covering a wide range of functions and responsibilities that depends on the level of qualification, experience, and working environment. At the initial level, they are required to beside care of patients and at the senior level, they are required to manage a special group of people like psychiatric, pediatric, and intensive care patients, etc. which require specialized skills

Responsibilities of nurse:

  • Taking care of patients
  • Admission and discharge of patients
  • Constantly monitoring these patients and administer the prescribed medicine at regular interval
  • Assisting the doctors and help set up medical equipment in operation theatre and laboratories. 
  • Keeping records of patients progress
  • Attending the rounds with doctors
  • Providing pre and post operation care
  • taking patient samples, pulses, temperatures and blood pressures

Eligibility

There are courses available at different level like:

> ANM, GNM, and B.Sc in nursing are the different courses available after 10+2
> There are special Diploma courses are also available to get specialize in any one domain

To become eligible for a nurse job, one has to be registered. Each state has its own association that registers certified nurses. Once candidates obtain qualifications they can get themselves registered with the Nurses Council of their respective state. This makes them eligible to obtain a job.

How to be there?

ANM (Auxiliary Nurse and Midwife) 2 Years course, GNM (General Nursing and Midwife) course which is a 3 and half year of diploma are available to make a career in nursing. The minimum education requirement for this is 12th with Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.

After that, you can do B.Sc. Nursing.

When you completed your courses, you need to get registered with the registration authority of the state. After registration, you’ll be eligible to apply for jobs.

Skills Required

The most important qualities for a nurse to possess are patience, dedication to working with patients (and doctors), ability to work for long hours, compassion, organization, and great communication skills. As they have to spend lots of their time with patients, understanding the patient's mindset during illness will be very helpful. One should be mentally and physically strong, have strong stamina, and be emotionally strong.

Nursing is an occupation where you need to ready for long hours of work. In almost all hospitals, duty time is defined, but still, you have to be ready for extra duty in the absence of any other or in any emergence case.

Salary

According to payscale.com, the average salary of a staff nurse is Rs. 276,655 annually.
An entry-level Staff Nurse with less than 1-year experience can expect to earn an average total compensation (includes tips, bonus, and overtime pay) of Rs. 208,150.
An early career Staff Nurse with 1-4 years of experience earns an average total compensation of Rs. 246,752.
A mid-career Staff Nurse with 5-9 years of experience earns about Rs. 246,752.

There are lots of career opportunities in this sector as nurses are always needed. From large hospitals in big cities to community centers in rural areas, nurses are always in demand.
